UNIONDALE, NEW YORK (March 8, 2023)—In recognition of her dedication and impactful work within the Latino community, Uniondale School District’s Director of Multilingual Learners, Dr. Estrella Olivares-Orellana, was recently honored along with five other women across New York by Governor Hochul. This accolade is in acknowledgment of Dr. Olivares-Orellana's significant contributions to the Latina Mentoring Program at Uniondale, a pivotal initiative designed to empower Latina youth through mentorship and support.
"Estrella’s dedication to the Latina Mentoring Initiative exemplifies the profound impact that focused, heartfelt work can have on our communities,” said Superintendent Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil. “Her efforts have uplifted many young lives and as a beacon of inspiration and leadership within the Latina community. We are immensely proud of her achievements and grateful for her unwavering commitment to making a difference."
The nomination for this honor was submitted by Samantha McQuibban, Deputy Director of the New York State Mentoring Program. In her nomination, Ms. McQuibban highlighted the essential building blocks and support provided to the Latina Mentoring Initiative, commending the unique and beautiful programming developed under Dr. Olivares-Orellana's guidance in various cities. Following a meticulous selection process, the Governor's office identified six outstanding women, including Dr. Olivares-Orellana, as finalists for this recognition.
